When Your Inner Critic Sounds Like Someone Else

negative self-talk self improvement Jun 15, 2025

Have you ever noticed that the harshest things you say to yourself… don’t even sound like you?

Maybe they sound like critical parents. Maybe they echo a teacher who told you you’d never succeed. Maybe they carry the tone of a past partner who tore you down.

Sometimes, our inner critic isn’t really us. It’s internalized voices from our past and sadly ones we’ve unknowingly adopted as our own.

The first step to healing that inner voice is recognizing that not all your thoughts are your truth.

Ask Yourself:

  • Who does this voice sound like?
  • Where did I first hear this message?
  • Does this belief help me grow—or does it hold me back?

Once you recognize that the inner critic is borrowed, you can choose to return it. You can say, “That’s not my truth anymore.”

Then comes the rewriting.

You begin to speak to yourself in a voice that is loving, wise, grounded, and kind. One that cheers you on instead of tearing you down.

This voice might feel unfamiliar at first—but over time, it becomes your own. And it changes everything.
