Have you ever felt like no matter how much you try, you keep hitting the same walls, repeating the same patterns, or feeling stuck in the same spot? If so, you're not alone. Many people experience frustration because they don't fully understand their relationship with change. They might feel overwhelmed, resistant, or simply unsure of how to move forward.

The truth is that change isn't a simple switch you can flip. It's a journey composed of distinct stages. Each stage requires specific attitudes, skills, and approaches. Trying to skip stages or misunderstanding where you are in this cycle can lead to self-criticism, confusion, and an endless loop of frustration. But here’s the good news: when you clearly recognize where you are in the cycle of change, you can finally stop blaming yourself for not being "further along" and start taking meaningful steps forward.

Why Do We Feel Stuck?

Feeling stuck often happens because we expect ourselves to change overnight. We set high expectations and when we inevitably stumble, we beat ourselves up, reinforcing negative beliefs about our abilities. The frustration grows, and soon, we're convinced change isn’t possible for us. This isn't because we lack motivation or discipline—it's because we’re unaware of the psychological stages necessary for sustainable change.

For example, imagine wanting to adopt healthier habits. If you're in the "Contemplation" stage—meaning you recognize the need for change but haven't decided exactly how—you may feel immense pressure to jump straight into "Action" without proper preparation. This mismatch of expectation and readiness is why many people experience setbacks or fail to create lasting habits.

Understanding the Cycle of Change

The Cycle of Change consists of six distinct stages:

  1. Pre-Contemplation: You’re not yet considering change and might even be resistant.
  1. Contemplation: You know change is needed but feel uncertain about how to start.
  1. Preparation: You’re actively gathering information, setting goals, and planning steps.
  1. Action: You’ve started implementing changes and seeing initial results.
  1. Maintenance: You’re sustaining your changes, working consistently to avoid relapse.
  1. Relapse: You've experienced setbacks or a return to old habits, but this stage offers critical learning opportunities.

Recognizing these stages clearly indicates that change is not linear but cyclical and often complex. It’s normal to move back and forth between stages as you learn, grow, and evolve.

How Identifying Your Stage Helps You Move Forward

When you accurately identify your stage, you remove the guesswork from personal growth. Each stage has its own unique tasks and challenges. For instance, if you're in the Preparation stage, your priority might be researching options, gathering resources, and building your support network. On the other hand, if you're in Action, your focus should shift toward building consistency, accountability, and resilience.

Knowing your current stage helps you:

  • Focus your energy and attention on the right tasks.
  • Set realistic expectations for yourself, reducing frustration and self-criticism.
  • Create a tailored, effective action plan to move forward.

Let’s consider an example: Sarah wanted to start a consistent exercise routine. Initially, she kept starting and stopping, feeling overwhelmed by her lack of progress. After identifying her stage through a self-awareness quiz, Sarah realized she was in the Contemplation stage—she needed more information and a structured plan before diving into intense workouts. This awareness led her to research beginner-friendly exercises, set achievable goals, and ultimately move successfully into the Action stage.
